People do graffiti for a couple of reasons. The main purpose is to mark a territory. The second reason is to garner attention and finally mainly do it as an artistic release.

Unfortunately vandalism is illegal and graffiti, no matter the effort or quality, is not considered artistic by many so instead of putting it on paper or a canvas for showings it often winds up on buildings and bridges.
